Born and raised in Beijing, China, Shi Dong draws on a rich heritage of traditional Chinese arts and philosophy. Shi studied philosophy at Capital Normal University in Beijing, China. She then went to San Francisco where she earned her MA in Art Education and MFA in Fine Arts at the Academy of Art University. Shi uses the properties of her medium to create abstract paintings that respond to both the atmosphere of her surroundings and poetry.
Much of her work is influenced by her natural environment and her memory of nature. The imagination of her work is evoked through multiple channels, including canvas, wood, paper, silkscreen and etching. She uses color and shapes, reveals forms by concealing and unearthing pentimenti and suggests elements of landscape in her process. The method of looking inward and outward and, in the moments of painting, finding her way on the surface is her approach to creating paintings infused with poetry and the memory of landscape. Shi Dong is currently a Ph.D candidate of RMIT with a focus in Art. Her research title is An Exploration of the Influence of Zen Inspired Poetic Nature Painting in Contemporary Abstraction.
